Preliminary Works

Project: Inverted Species

The degradation of our planet has been perpetuated to serve human comfort and convenience. The distancing we experience with digital media reflects a deep-seated fear of change. Our world is in constant flux, especially with the rapid advancement of technology. Knowledge, too, has become increasingly uncertain and unpredictable. Through the use of digital media, I have deconstructed, merged, and re-envisioned the concept of a photograph—now seen as a data set that captures and measures light.

  • This is work I did over the summer holidays. I used a photo of bubbles and while I was editing it and playing around with distorting colour (through inversion, colour map grading, and exposure) had created a variety of fake heavily distorted images. Each image, although the same file, looked drastically different as the colours changed and morphed. I curred about 500 jpeg files that I put into a 32-second stop motion video that shows the progression of change and movement with the data editing of the original photo. I want to bring this similar technique into my final project for this class to further distort my imagery through colour and exposure editing.

Colour Inversion

Here are some experimental videos of my body portrayed up close with various colour waves. I think the inversion of tones, such as the stills on the left, creates more of that alien body that I associate with myself being sick. It would be interesting as well if I could move the colour adjustments similar to the stop-motion.

Installation and Presentation

I wish to project the final project across several monitors. Each monitor will be placed just far enough that the viewer will only be able to focus on one screen at a time, fully engaging the audience in an immersive and uncomfortable experience. With the use of several screens, 3-5, I think this work will show more of a complex reading into the way my body works. I wanted to

play with sound and how I could specialize it to create more of this uncomfortable environment for the viewer. Using speakers from various angles I could create this immersive experience.
